If you have a personal PayPal account, I’m sorry, you can’t apply for a PayPal debit card. This option is only available for Premier and Business PayPal accounts.
NOTE: Don’t get discouraged, as you can easily upgrade to one of these accounts following the steps below. If you have a business account already, skip this stage to the next stage.
Stage 1: (If you don’t have a business account)
Step 1: Switch to a business account
Click the link “Upgrade to Business account” in the lower-left corner of your home screen when you log in to your account, then follow the prompts.
NOTE: You can either “upgrade” your current account with the same profile name and email address, or you can “create a new account” to have a different account with another email address.
- Switch to a Premier account
Many people do not know about the premier account. Don’t worry, you’ll get a complete dose of all details relating to PayPal debit card today.
A Premier PayPal account is for those who want to have a high transaction volume or want to accept personal credit card payments. It is a business account but is useful if you don’t officially own a business.
You can only get a Premier account by upgrading to it within your personal PayPal account (when you log in). There is no way you can open a Premier account from the PayPal homepage if you do not log in.
Follow the same steps to upgrade to a Premier account as for upgrading to a business account.
Step 2: Go to the PayPal website or app
If you have not signed up for a PayPal account yet, or if you want to use a separate email address than your personal PayPal account, go to the PayPal homepage. Click “Sign Up” in the upper right corner.
Step 3: Click the option next to “Business Account”
After you click sign up, a screen will pop up with you two options. Click the bubble next to “Personal Account” or next to “Business Account.” Now, click the radio button next to “Business Account.”
If you are a business owner, open a business account. You don’t need any verification process for this.
However, you can decide to open this type of account even if you are not a business owner…..
……but that is what this type of account is for.
With a business account, you get to enjoy features such as invoicing services and the ability to accept credit card payments.
NOTE: It is advisable to use your Employer Identification Number (EIN) number instead of your social security number to keep the account separate from your income for tax.
Step 4: Select either Standard or Pro
After you’ve clicked “Business Account” and clicked the “Next” option, a new screen with two options will pop up. Choose between “Standard” or “Pro” accounts.
The Standard account is free while the Pro is $30 a month.
The Pro account offers customization for the checkout page on your business website. Click here to learn more about it.
Step 5: Input your personal information
After you’ve chosen the type of business PayPal account you want, the next step is to enter your email address.
NOTE: Ensure this is the email address you want to use for a business Paypal account because it automatically becomes your profile name and PayPal identity.
Step 6: Create a password
To keep your account secure, it is advisable to use a combination of all functions (numbers, special characters, lowercase, and uppercase).
Step 7: Personal details
When you create a password, you’ll need to type in your personal details for PayPal to keep track of your identity in future transactions.
Step 8: Link a credit card, debit card, or bank account
Now that your account setup is complete, you can start receiving payment.
You cannot pay for anything until you link your card or bank account.
Choose either your debit card or bank account, or credit card, to attach to your PayPal account.
You’ll be sent an email for verification.
Step 9: Confirm your bank account or debit/credit card
The last step is to confirm your alternate method of payment. If you’ve already linked your bank account to PayPal, PayPal will give you three options for confirming the account. You may or may not need to verify your card.
- Sometimes you can get an instant confirmation.
- If you choose a single method of verification for your bank account, you will have a monthly limit on how much you can transfer to your checking account.
- However, if you use two methods of verification, there won’t be a limit and you can transfer any amount you want per month to your checking account from PayPal.
Stage 2: If you have a business account, here’s how to apply for your debit card.
The moment your PayPal account is complete, you can apply for a PayPal Debit Card.
From your PayPal home screen, click the menu option “Tools” at the top spot of the screen. Click the option for “All Tools.” A lot of different blocks will come up, scroll down until you see one for “PayPal debit card” on the left-hand side (in row 4).
Clicking this box will take you to the debit card application.
Input your personal information. On the application screen for the PayPal Business Debit MasterCard, it should show your name.
See if your birth date is correct, type in your social security number, confirm your address and phone number. This is all the information you need to apply for the card.
PayPal has a reputation for strict internet security. If you don’t feel safe entering your social security number, read PayPal’s explanation here.
PayPal requires your details to abide by federal laws that are in place to keep America safe from terrorism and money laundering activities.
Wait for your approval. After submitting your application, wait to get approved for the debit card. Approval should be fast.
- If approved, it usually takes 7–10 days to receive your PayPal Debit Mastercard in your mail.
- If denied, you can reapply after 30 days.
- Daily spending limits
You don’t get to see this everywhere.
But there is a standard daily maximum for PayPal debit card use.
You are only permitted to withdraw $400 a day from an ATM point and only permitted spending $3,000 a day on purchases.
As you use your card over time, your limits will get periodic reviews. Your limit may increase or decrease depending on your account history and activity.
Can PayPal Debit Cards Be Used Internationally?
Do you have WhatsApp or Instagram app on your phone? I hope you agree with me it’s accepted in almost all countries.
You can use the PayPal debit card anywhere Mastercard is available, as long as you have funds in the account.
PayPal Account Limit
Unless your account is unverified, there is not much worry about the limit. Unverified PayPal accounts have a monthly withdrawal limit of $500.
If you have a verified account, there is no limit on the amount of money you can send.
Although you may be limited to $10,000 in a single transaction.
What I mean is if you want to send $30, 000, you might need to do it thrice. That is $10,000 three times.
However, there can be few reasons for your account to be limited. The most common are:
- An unauthorized user
If PayPal believes someone else is using your account, they might place a limit to protect you from fraudulent charges and scams.
